I've been using this CSTEP-2 with 1/4" black oxide Grommets for three years now with heavy material. Here is what I've learned:
1000D Cordura Single Ply- It works quite well with this tough fabric. The speed you set the grommet with is a determining factor in how the self-punching grommets cuts the material. If the press is slowly pushed, the majority of the material will cut, but there will be several threads stretched across the opening. If you press the handle down quickly, the material will be clean cut and the grommet will be seated properly. Keep in mind, if you move the material at all during the pressing, the washer may move. If the washer moves, the grommet will still seat in it, but it will be off centered and half engaged. These are a pain to remove.
1000D Cordura Double Ply - This is very similar to the single ply with the exception of a clean cut. You must move the handle down quickly and with purpose. If it's not moved quickly, you will be cutting out uncut fabric if the grommet seats at all. A rubber mallet is what I use once I have the handle depressed without setting the grommet.
500D Single/Double Ply - This press punches through this material like butter. Clean cuts and well set grommets. Quick handle action works better than slow.
Common fabric - I've used this machine with other nylons and poly fabrics and it works fine. I don't knw how it will work with any fabric that can stretch though (Like GorTex etc...)
